Abbaye royale de Fontevraud
Rue Saint-Jean de l'Habit, 49590 Fontevraud-l'Abbaye France
Founded in 1101 on the border of the provinces of Poitou, Anjou and Touraine, the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is the largest monastic city inherited from the Middle Ages. It owes its power in part to the Plantagenets and to its close ties with Eleanor of Aquitaine. The effigy of the queen of France and then of England remains at the heart of the Abbey church alongside those of Henry II and Richard the Lionheart. The Abbey is a « very particular foundation » run by an abbess, although it houses both men and women. Cherished by kings, it was home to distinguished nuns and nobility for seven centuries before the Revolution drove out all the monks and nuns. Napoleon transformed the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud into one of the toughest prisons in France, while it remained a prison until 1963. Initiated by the Pays de la Loire Region, the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is today a radiant and creative Centre Culturel de Rencontre. Free for minors and students under 25 all year round.

Chateau de Saumur
49400, Saumur France
A symbol of the town of Saumur, the château is an old fortress that was converted into a palace by the Dukes of Anjou (14th and 15th centuries), including King René. It then became the residence of the town’s governors, a prison, then a depot for arms and munitions. In 1906, the town bought the château from the State to house its municipal museum, which has since earned the Musée de France label. A rich collection of decorative arts currently occupies the first floor of the north and east wings. Part of the horse collection, featuring objects from Antiquity to the early 20th century, is on display in the old abbey church. The château gardens offer exceptional panoramic views of the Loire and the town. In the summer, there are activities for all the family. Forbidden to pets.
